Historic Hempstead Plains - Nassau County, Long Island

Long Island City - P.R.R.Co. electric plant

If you like this kind of information please visit the

THE HUDSON & MANHATTAN RAILROAD POWERHOUSE of Jersey City site.

It has great photos and the history of that plant.

Built like a fortress at ground level.
Granite walls and steel bars.
Square manhole covers.
I thought this plant was fed coal by rail car. It was fed coal by a conveyor belt mechanism in the roof that led to a pier to the west. Rail cars were used to remove ashe and debris. Tracks are still buried in the sidewalk. V.F. Seyfried has a nice shot of this plant in Vol. 6 or 7 of his "comprehensive History of the LIRR" - corrected 1/2/2000 VF
