I recall all these places, and thanks to Ron, a few that I'd forgotten. The Washington Avenue Lake was know to us as the "Red Barn Lake", appropriately enough, for the old barn nearby. The south side of this body of water was a small swimming hole in which a boyhood youth from Uniondale dove from the rocks and broke his neck, dying several days later. This occurred in the 1940s. Also, in this same area, in 1931, Nassau Patrolman Fred Hirsch was gunned down and killed by Francis "Two-Gun" Crowley in 1931. March 11th, 2000 Tim Ivers ZebraT711@aol.com |
